Okus doma – Taste of Home

Migrations: The Taste of Home, July 2018, Open House Hvar

For the first week of Open House 2018 we welcomed ‘Okus doma‘ and hosted an event where we invited people to tell us a little about their experience with food and home.

Here are some of the contributions people made.

What is your earliest food memory?

I remember eating with my grandma – ‘kruha i masti’. She was a professional cook and that was considered to be a specialty.

Grilled fish in the back yard of the family house of my dad’s mum. The smell of barbecue wood in the old steel barbecue that looks like a witch’s cauldron. My dad, with no shirt on, carefully feels if the fish is ready by reading the signs: white eye on the upper side. The tail goes up because the fish is extra fresh. I love it with olive oil, parsley and garlic. And white bread. J

GRILLED CHEESE

‘Eiernudeln and gruner salad’ –  noodles with eggs and green salad from my grandmother.

Scrambled eggs.

What is your earliest memory of preparing food?

I don’t have really nice memories of food preparations. My mum used to get angry if I would messed up the food or did anything ‘wrong’. Kitchen was ‘her territory’ and I started to hate preparing the food.

The meticulous preparation of the so-called ‘French salad’. My parents are both architects so cutting the cubes had to be pure perfection – each vegetable ½ X ½ cm. Amazing taste, though! And great, albeit a bit stressful time spent with my parents.

COOKING FROZEN GNOCCHI MADE BY MY GRANDMOTHER AND OF COURSE, OVERCOOKING THEM INTO ONE GIANT GNOCCHI

Cooking noodles with me and my father, 10 years of age.

Pasta carbonara.

What does ‘home’ mean to you?

For me home means the place where I feel secure and loved. It is a place where I can be true to myself, it is a place where I can learn and grow in life. It is filled with dear people, with whom I can share hugs, cries, laughter and joy. Home is a spectrum of all colours and different dances. How I feel is how I am at home. Home is Vrisnik. Home is Zagreb. Home is Novakova. Home is Masha. Home is me.

Home is a safe place inside or outside me that supports me in who I am, in being free and creative. Home is where I can relax.

THE PLACE WHERE I WANNA BE.

Where my family is.

A place where you always like to come and where you never like to leave.
